What’s the big deal?

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the United States has around 3,400 cases of sudden unexplained infant deaths per year.  It is our greatest hope that by educating parents-to-be that this tragedy can be avoided.  While the full cause of SIDS is still unknown, it is believed that the babies that suffer from this fate may have an issue with the part of their brain that controls breathing and waking during sleep (https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/sids.html).  This part of the brain should wake a baby that isn’t receiving enough oxygen and trigger them to wake and cry.

Babies should be placed on their backs to sleep.  If the baby has reached the milestone of rolling over (back to front and front to back), they can choose the sleep position they prefer.  There is no need to use side-sleep wedges or positioners once baby can roll over.

So, what are the keys of safe sleep?

  1. Your baby should be placed on a firm, flat mattress to sleep. No pillows or soft surfaces.
  2. The bed should have a fitted mattress and no other bedding.
  3. Baby should be placed on their back to sleep until 12 months old.
  4. Your baby should not be sleeping in your bed.
